Lohitha Das passes away

Lohitha Das, one of the best scriptwriters that Malayalam cinema ever had, died today in Kochi. He belonged to a class of writers who found their raw material from the lives of ordinary people. Some of the best musicals in Malayalam cinema were penned by him, like “His Highness Abdullah” and “Bharatham“. Both Mammootty and Mohan Lal had some of their best characters in their acting career from Lohitha Das. He gave movies like Thaniyaavarthanam and Boothakannaadi to Mammootty and Kireedam and Bharatham to Mohan Lal. He introduced some of the best actresses in Malayalam – Manju Warrier, Meera Jasmin and Bhaama. Even though he enjoyed great success as a script-writer, his career as a director was not so bright. His last two directorial ventures had flopped in the box office. But he will be remembered for the characters and stories he had penned down in his life time.
RIP, Lohitha Das…

I was shocked to hear the news yesterday afternoon… He was one of my alltime favorites and I particularly liked the movies with common man touch (like Sallapam, Veendum chila veettu karyangal etc) than musical classics for which he had written screen play. I also liked ‘Arayannangalude veedu’.
As a person from Chalakudy I feel even more sad
He used to be a regular visitor to Pulikkakadavu shappu near my house until a couple of years back.
It is very very difficult to find people like Lohithadas, Sathyan Anthikkadu etc in the new generation…

Ajith: True. Sathyan and Lohi together have given us some good movies that we could relate to or had a good message.

I watched most of the films mentioned about. I must catch Thaniyaavarthanam.
I don’t know about the future of films in the South. Certainly, Tamil and Telugu have already lost their soul. It’s sad that Malayalam is heading that way. Possibly Kasthuriman was the last film I watched of Lohithadas. It might be too slow for some, but I loved it for its strong characters. In many ways, the characters were enchanting.
Worse, the directors who were capable of bringing out great music (at least, to my taste), passing away, means a loss in two platforms:-(

Kasturiman was a fine film, except for those advt bits for Alukkas from time to time in the first half.

Definitely a loss to the Malayalam film industry….
