Why do you listen to music?
About an year back, Josh asked me to write about what makes me sing or love music. I had never thought of it, really. What makes a person listen to music? There is no one particular reason, I believe.
I have seen people listening to music at the bus stands, at the railway stations etc. That reminds me of an advertisement for iPod – “when you do not wish to talk to strangers, plug in your iPod“. But that takes out the romanticism of music, but there are people who do just that. I have seen youngsters playing loud music at home, just to ignore the lectures of the parents. They just shut the door of their room and play the music aloud. Or the people who goes to clubs, to party. They want loud, techno, new age music, just to help them shake a leg. Different people have different reasons for listening to music.
I have had all these reasons to listen to music. But I also had those moments where I would just sit close to the windows of my house, just to listen to the music that came out of the neighbor’s house. Thus I heard the songs like MJ’s Beat It to Manjal Prasaadavum. Or Billy Joel to Pudamuri kalyaanam. I also had those moments when I would just plug in the Walkman earphones and sit in the veranda at night, watching the sprinkles of rain outside that was barely seen in the dim street lights. Those were the moments in which I fell in love with music.
Why do I listen to music? Because it soothes my soul. It takes off the anger, sadness and despair in me and says “come, let’s take a walk and everything will be fine“. And it works all the time.
Now, what is your reason?
PS: By the way, do check out Joshua’s website for updates on his movie project with Shyamaprasad – Ritu. He has written the story and screenplay of this much awaited new film from Shyamaprasad.

Hi Jo:
Nice post. Like you, I also listen to wildly eclectic genres. For me the reason for listening is just inexplicable. One example, I saw the beginning of the movie Dil Chahta Hai (when the titles are presented) several times, over and over again to enjoy the background music SEL scored. Just don’t know why I liked it or how. I can tell you one thing, it is humbling when I see talented people like you and others–There’s a lot to learn and hear! Again nice thoughts…keep blogging!

Oh yeah, some BG scores in movies totally takes you away. Sometimes I used to wonder what makes me like even some boring soap movies a lot. I thought and I found out that the reason is it’s bg score!
It doesn’t pops up and tells us that its there, its so interlined with the scenes and gets into us.

Dear Jo,
Thank you for sharing this! As you know, music is a big part of my life and I listen and play for so many reasons. Music creates a soundtrack for my life; it takes me back to times and helps me remember; it energises or relaxes me; it helps my imagination soar and my creativity flow; it brings me closer to other people… the list goes on…
I’m sorry for having been out of touch for so long, but I’m still following your work when I have time! I hope you’re well.

Hey Very nice post Jo. Music has always been a part n parcel of my life. Am all ears to any kind of music. Lot of sweet memories passed by as I was reading your post. Still I remember the first time I heard humma humma from the slums while I was waiting for the school van. I kept humming the song the whole day in school. And mariamman devotional songs from loudspeakers, bhajans, radio, music classes, classical kutcheris, light music programs., music channels, great ad music, good serial songs.. Music surrounds me all the time. Music literally rules me at times. It has a lot to do with my emotions. When I want to cry out, I listen to some vry sad music.. And when happy, some all time fav peppy songs. Listening to music gives me lot of happiness and helps me be optimistic about everything and every one around.

Joe, I was reminded of the great scene from the Mel brooks movie – History of the world
The origin of music & interest therein during the stone ages is so beautifully depicted.

It is probably the most organized flow of thought and thus get taken in quickly by ones mind. No wonder Jagdish Bose decided that plants like music and grow better, others found that cows give better milk etc..Curiously humans are still stuck with music only as entertainment…
