Music review – Payyans, Living Together

(This music review was first appeared in Sound Box – India’s Premier Music Trade Magazine. Do check out the magazine from the nearest news stand.)

Movie: Payyans
Music: Alphonse Joseph
Lyrics: Kaithapram, Anil Panachooraan
Rating: 3.5 stars

People outside Kerala would know Alphonse Joseph as the guy who sang the ballad “Aaromale” in Tamil movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, composed by A R Rahman. Alphonse’s plus point, be it in singing or composing, is his strong influence of western music and his ability to sing high-octave songs. Payyans, the new filmy album from Alphonse is also a satisfying album in that genre. The album consists of four original songs, an unplugged version of the opening track and three karaoke tracks.

The first song “Thennal Chirakundo” is sung by Karthik and Jyotsna. The song starts off with a beautiful guitar riff and bass. The good thing about this song is that it does not over kill the vocals with orchestration and each compliments the other beautifully. One thing that does stand out though is Karthik’s Malayalam pronunciation at parts. Other than that both the vocalists have done a good job on this song. The unplugged version of this song is also included in the album.

The music arrangement at the beginning of the second song, “Route maari nadakkaam” would remind you of the song “Oru koodai sunlight” from the Rajnikanth movie Sivaji. This is a trendy song and the vocals of Benny Dayal and Reshmi is a perfect choice. What irritates us with this song is its lyrics. Many of our lyricists seem to think that just throwing in some words like style, blue tooth, pizza, facebook, chat etc would make a trendy, peppy song. But in fact it is the lyrics that puts us down. If not for the vocals of Benny and Reshmi, you would have skipped to the next number right away.

Katha Parayaan” is a beautiful melodious number sung by the veteran singer P Jayachandran. This song would steal your heart in the first listen.  “Doore vazhi” is sung by Alphonse Joseph himself. The song fits his voice and range like a T. It’s mid to high octave singing is a perfect fit for Alphonse. The orchestral arrangement is also very interesting with a mix of eastern and western style.

I would go with 3.5 out of 5 for this album. This is certainly one good work from Alphonse Joseph, the music director.

Movie: Living Together
Music: M Jayachandran
Lyrics: Kaithapram
Rating: 3 stars

When it comes to M Jayachandran’s music, what you would primarily expect is some melodious numbers coupled with a semi-classical number. MJ does not disappoint his fans with this album. His choice of singers for this album is also notable. There are 8 tracks in this filmy album.

Paattinte Palkadavil is a melodious dance number sung by Shreya Ghoshal. Shreya has done an awesome job on the vocals of this song. It’s admirable to see this singer rendering her songs to perfection, no matter which language it is. There is a male version of this song, sung by Vijay Yesudas.

Raaga Chandranariyaathe is a beautiful duet by Karthik and Swetha. Karthik’s vocal in this song is quite good. Saamarasa Ranjani is a semi-classical number sung by M G Sreekumar. MGS has done this very well.

It looks like M Jayachandran cannot do an album without Yesudas. He has spared a beautiful melodious number called Mayangoo Nee Sakhi for Yesudas. Yesudas’ voice is straining with his age and it is obviously evident in the songs which he have been singing lately. But still it’s amazing to see this man singing quite well for his age.

Kuttikurumbaa Vaa is a fun song that opens with a children chorus. Anila has sung this song and she has put so much energy and fun into the song that it requires. Sudeep has sung the male version of this song which is also an energy-filled version. Ilaku Naage is sung by Sannidhaanandan and Janardhanan. Sannidhanandan is the perfect choice for this folk-ish song.

To sum it up, this album is a mixed bag of folk, dance, semi-classical, romantic melodies which you would definitely like if you have always liked M Jayachandran’s music, but do not expect any surprises here. I would go with 3 out of 5 stars for M Jayachandran’s music for Living Together.

Perks of brahminical upbringing

Hrishikesh Kanitkar has a calming presence on his surroundings. The way he bats, the way he leads his side out on the field, the way he stands in the middle, even the way he answers questions from the media. Everything he does is composed and collected, the mark of a traditional Konkanastha Chitapavan Brahmin upbringing.

Who killed “Shobhana”?

My friend Dinkar has sent me this story. Apparently, Times of India has put a photo of the wrong Shobhana in this news and made people believe that she killed herself. What you would notice is that Times of India has not bothered to remove or replace the photo of dancer/actor Shobhana even after so many people have commented on the article.

Celebrating ‘relentless journalism’ – CNN-IBN style

CNN-IBN celebrates the five years of ‘relentless journalism’ and this news comes at the top news section in their website. Looks like the CNN-IBN team has decided to feast the eyes of their online readers on this occasion with a 630 x 420 wide photo that you would usually find in a soft-porn magazine. The news, Man leaks sex MMS after girl refuses to marry, of course is of national importance and deservedly featured in the top news section.

In case if you have missed any of the other infamous MMS sex scandals (I wonder how does the public find them when our good-intentioned journalists are only publishing the news with a photo 😉 ) IBN has a list and details of those MMS clips in the same news.

Now go ahead, and celebrate with CNN-IBN!

Liu Xiaobo – A saint or a hypocrite?

I have never heard of Liu Xiaobo until he got the Nobel Prize for peace. A number of articles on Liu followed after the Nobel prize and the world once again has turned it’s attention to China and the human rights violation in the country. Liu is still under arrest and people continue to register their protest on his arrest. A saint was born. Everything was good. Until I read the Wiki article on Liu, another article in Counter Punch by Tariq Ali and a good one at Guardian. And I was surprised.

I was not surprised that the Chinese government arrested Liu Xiaobo, because everybody knows how Chinese government curbs the freedom to criticize their government. Everybody knows about Tienanmen Square. But I was surprised and shocked to hear that the Nobel prize was awarded to a hypocrite disguised as a human rights activist who support bloody and unnecessary wars in the world. And his pro-war statements lead us to suspect that this man is somebody who is looking for a political overthrow in China in the future and to claim his stake.

Liu was arrested for his involvement with Charter 08 Manifesto. Liu was just one of the several authors of the manifesto. I hope the other authors are genuine people who stand for human rights, but Liu’s involvement is suspicious. Liu has served as the President of Independent Chinese PEN Center, an organization funded by the National Endowment for Democracy which is an American non-profit organization.

So how did Liu return his favors for the American funding?

  • He wrote an article titled “Victory to the Anglo-American Freedom Alliance”, in which he praised the U.S. led post-cold-war wars as “best examples of how war should be conducted in a modern civilization.”
  • During the 2004 US presidential election, Liu again praised Bush for his war effort against Iraq and condemned Democratic party candidate John Kerry for not sufficiently supporting the US’s wars.
  • He said that “The major wars that the US became involved in are all ethically defensible.“[Source: Wiki]
  • Liu has also said that “The Korean and Vietnam wars fought by the US were wars against totalitarianism and enhanced Washington’s ‘moral credibility’.

Agreed, Liu has stopped students from rioting in Tienanmen to prevent student deaths. But how do you call this war-mongering guy a human rights activist while he on one hand tries to protect people from getting killed (in his own country) and then go ahead and cheer the murder of innocents in other countries? So is it like, it’s not okay in my country (because it is where I live in, plus as a pro-western guy I could have stake in the future when something against the current government happens in the future) but it’s okay in any other country, because I don’t give a damn about it? You cannot trust people like these hypocrites with human rights. I am baffled (or rather not) that the Nobel committee chose to ignore this. But then they must be having their own politics too.

Tariq Ali says:

The Norwegian jurist Fredrik Heffermehl argues that the committee is in breach of the will and testament left behind by the inventor of dynamite whose bequests fund the prizes:

‘The Nobel committee has not received prize money for free use, but was entrusted with money to give to the pivotal element in creating peace, breaking the vicious circle of arms races and military power games. From this point of view the 2010 Nobel is again an illegitimate prize awarded by an illegitimate committee.’

Happy New Year and a song!

First of all, Happy New Year everyone! May this year bring lots of happiness, peace and prosperity in your lives. May this new year also teach you to be your betterselves. What better way to spend a new year eve than composing and singing a new song! Nisikanth (from Eenam) sent me his beautiful lyrics for a new year song. The song is meant to be the first song for the new effort called “Naadham”. I composed the song instantly because I loved the lyrics so much because it had the flavour of New Year and friendship of the virtual world. I sang a rough draft and sent it to Krishna Raj (who has composed and orchestrated a song for Blogswara V6). This is the first time I talked to Krishna and we got the tempo going. Krishna created an amazing orchestration for my composition, almost instantly. I am awestruck by the talent of this guy, Krishna. When I got the minus track to record the song again, I was taken to another plane because of Krishna’s magical touch.

So here comes a song that was born in just 2 days, through emails. My first song in 2011. Do hear and let us know what you think.

Song: Swaramunarum Manassukalil
Lyrics: Nisikanth
Orchestration: Krishna Raj
Composed and sung by: Joseph Thomas (Jo)

2010 – The year that was

Before you begin reading this, I do this post every year to assess my life each year (last year’s post is here). Because without writing this or taking an account of what happened in the passing year, I wouldn’t be able to count the blessings I have or the lessons learned. This is purely of personal nature and might not interest you. Now that I warned you, you may stay or leave. 🙂

Like 2009, it was a very happening year in 2010 as well. There were many pleasant and unpleasant moments. And I have learned a bit to let go the unpleasant ones (though it is not easy). But I would remember this year the most because it gave me the happiest moment of my life to date – when my son was born.

Alright, good things first. I got engaged on January 16th and got married on 31st. I became a father on 22nd of November, the same date I met my wife for the first time in 2009. 🙂 My son’s birth is the happiest event in my life so far. In February, my first music video was released on Internet. Iniyethra Naal was a song I composed. Another song, Manju Pole Oru Swapnam, that I composed and sung, is all set to broadcast on TV channels and the news got published in Kerala Kaumudi. Blogswara kept on going and the 6th album was released on March 1st. In June, I was interviewed by The Hindu Metro Plus, Kochi, about Blogswara. My cover of Picha Vacha Naal Muthal has crossed 10,000 online plays (it now stays at 12,000 and 3877 mp3 downloads in total).

Blogging has diminished but not dead yet. 🙂 I still feel this is one amazing medium that I can always use to express myself. And it is a pleasure when I meet people and they say “I have read Jocalling” or “I know you through your blog“. Expressing thoughts with an individual signature of the personal space cannot be this easy with any other tools available in Internet – be it Facebook, Twitter or any other social media.

In the new year, I am going to spend some of the free time for myself and my music. I have not sung much this year as the personal and family responsibilities mounted up. I think it would only increase this year but I will prioritize better. Though I have not posted many karaoke songs in the blog, my mobile is full of rough tunes that I recorded each time I get a new tune. 🙂 Sometime in the near future, and God knows when, it will hopefully turn out to be an individual music album which is my biggest musical dream.

One good thing happened last year is that I have restarted the old habit of reading during the train journeys from Trivandrum to Thrissur. You’re Hired (Nasha Fitter), Known Turf (Annie Zaidi), Super Freakonomics (Steven D Levitt, Stephen J Dubner), Dork (Sidin Vadukut), Roadrunner (Dilip D’Souza), My Friend Sancho (Amit Varma), Checklist Manifesto (Atul Gawande), Padachonte Thirakkadhakal (Sreenivasan), Nine Lives (William Dalrymple), Kerala history and it’s makers (A Sreedhara Menon), Keralavum Swaathanthrya Samaravum (A Sreedhara Menon) are the books I read this year.

Oh, and one thing I missed to mention! It is something I thought would never happen in my life. I got a four wheeler driving license. 🙂 May not seem a big deal to you guys, but for me as a person who doesn’t know how to ride even a bicycle, this is something real big. 🙂

We have lost 4 amazing people last year. Music director M G Radhakrishnan, lyricist Gireesh Puthenchery, singer Swarnalatha and Malayalam poet A Ayyappan. They will be missed…

The new year resolution – something which I wrote last year under the heading “Things which I learned this year” but never really learned – You don’t have to be nice to everyone.

I hope to learn why and how not to be nice to everyone around me. And to stop blindly believing in people. I am beginning to learn how to throw back the thorns which have been thrown at me for no good reason. There are people who backstabbed me and worse, they said it to my face, “hey, I just stabbed you because I had to”. And they get away with it. Not anymore. If it’s a war you want, it’s a war you get! 🙂 We have a strange world around us who think being nice is a sign of weakness and being arrogant is a sign of leadership. And I cannot afford to step aside.

I hope 2011 will make me a more confident man who believes in himself.

Wish you all a happy and prosperous new year. May this new year help you become better people, have lots of fun and cheers. Happy New Year!
